Privacy policy

Prowl is operated by Prowl Solutions LLC. This policy applies to information collected both on this site and through the API. It does not, however, cover the unofficial applications which may be generating the content you receive through Prowl.

Statistics

When visiting this site, your browser details, date and time of visit, etc. may be stored. This only applies to visits in a web browser, not to notifications submitted through the API.

Registration & settings

Your username, password, and email address (if provided) are stored on the server. We will never share your email address with a third party. Your password is stored using a one-way hash; nobody can recover the plain text.

Notification delivery

Notifications travel to Prowl over TLS, and are never available in plain text outside the server itself. From there, Prowl forwards them to:

• The Destination service, such as Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs), Google Firebase, etc., over TLS;
• Other Prowl servers, over TLS;
• Your devices, when they request the notifications, over TLS;
• The originating source of the notification, when communicating to Prowl, over TLS if the source supports it (practically all except some older IoT devices).

Notification content is never shared with a third party outside the services above. We only view notification content when absolutely necessary, e.g. diagnosing a delivery bug where the content matters to the repro.

User-identifiable information

Your IP address is stored only to apply rate limits. Routine logging does not associate IPs with delivered notifications. Per-request logging only occurs around error conditions.

Your notifications are stored on the Prowl server until you delete your account, delete the notification inside the Prowl app, or the notification expires and is automatically removed.

Cookies may be set for the purpose of keeping you logged in; none are stored for marketing or analytics purposes.

You can remove your account at any time, which permanently and irretrievably removes the associated notifications, settings, and other account data. Removing a notification from the Prowl app also removes it from the server. The settings page lets you remove your email address.

Backups are saved periodically. Removal of data from the live system does not retroactively remove it from existing backups, but those backups roll forward and are replaced within a month.

Prowl is not directed at children aged 13 or below. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information about children under 13.
